Summer
has finally arrived with buds bursting and lazy dogs lingering. When school
lets out there is life on my street and something of summer’s freedom is
felt in the laughter and delight of children playing. And while people are
playing and picnicking, I am still compelled to think of those children who
may not be able to access healthy and nutritious meals.
It is
important to me that CEF finds ways to continue to help feed children who
have come to depend on the school-based breakfast, lunch and snack programs
we help to support during the school year. We are working with summer day
camps and community-run programs to fill in the gaps while these schools are
closed. Many of these camps and programs rely on the community for
volunteers and support.
Building
a sense of community is so important, no matter where you live. I have been
urging my family and friends to invest in their communities. It is, after
all, through the support and care of others that we can begin to create
meaningful spaces and connections. This summer this might mean turning off
the air conditioner and opening the windows to the life on the street, or
planting a community garden, or disconnecting from cell phones and iPods to
smile, say hello and make eye contact with passers by, or volunteering
within a community-run camp program. There are so many opportunities,
especially over the summer!
Because
so many of you recognize the importance of community-building we are able to
make a difference for so many children across Canada. The children in both
your community and mine deserve all the support we can offer.
Happy
Summer,
Jill
