Set Up a Feeding Program
Dear Friends,

I started the Children's Emergency Foundation for much the same reason that you are thinking of starting a feeding program in your community now: it's just wrong that children in Canada should be going hungry.

And they are. Statistics Canada tells us that one in five children lives below the poverty line, and that many children are not getting enough to eat on a regular basis. Poverty in Canada doesn't always look like shacks or rundown tenement housing. Here, it sounds like a stomach rumbling at 9:00 a.m., or a student falling asleep or acting out in class because he or she has not eaten since lunch yesterday.

The stories are appalling.

But, there are hopeful stories too. Stories of ordinary people who decided that they were going to do something about it, right in their neighbourhood. Moms and dads who set up breakfast or lunch programs. Teachers and principals who set up healthy snack programs. Kids who are responding to the generosity of their community with healthy bodies, developing minds, and a view that they can help others as they have been helped.

Getting started is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. That's why we have produced this manual - to help walk you through the basics of starting up a feeding program for children.

There are caring Canadians who want to help you fund your program, through the Children's Emergency Foundation. I hope we will help you get involved too, making a tremendous difference in the life and health of children in your neighbourhood.

Let's work together so that all kids are healthy, well-fed and strong!
